For her S/S18 couture collection for Ralph & Russo, Tamara Ralph looked to the majesty of the East for inspiration. “In the past year
I was particularly fascinated by Asia and travelled there extensively,” she says. “I was spellbound by the exotic colouring and form of the local architecture, and the intricacy of the Kacho-e bird and flower paintings.” The resulting moodboard is an ode to the rich cultural heritage of the Far East, at once bold yet feminine, intimate yet regal juxtaposition reflected in the colour palette of soft pastels next to the imperial blues. Japanese artworks also inform the design: Hokusai’s The Great Wave is rendered in frothy mint organza and traditional motifs provide complex structural elements. The collection itself is vibrant in ornamentation; light-catching clusters of pearls and crystals and ornate silk thread-work conjure up the fantasy of a fairy tale come to life.
