Pandora Sykes has carved out a niche in the crowded fashion realm on Instagram as the rare girl who smiles wide in photos — and that leverages playful, colourful looks that don't take fashion too seriously. Now the Sunday Times Styles editor is lending that blithe look at fashion to a new swimwear collaboration with Hunza G — a UK brand well-known for its cameo on Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. The brand's creative director is Sykes' childhood friend Georgiana Huddart. "We'd always wanted to work on something together as we love each other's taste," Sykes says of the partnership, "I am wary of fashion journalists lending their name to design collaborations so if I did something, I wanted to do it all, from designing (with coloured pencils!) to casting, to creative direction…"
The result is a five-style collection (each available in multiple color ways) cheekily inspired by the duo's childhood in the Essex neighborhood of London — ranging from a blouse with short, capped sleeves to a cross-over swimsuit with breastfeeding moms in mind, a two-piece that leverages feminine ruffle details, a lace-up top and a standout maillot with waist-ruffle detail. "Hunza (before it became Hunza G) has this iconic swimsuit from the '80s with a little ballet skirt. I made the skirt a little smaller and then we found that it's actually so flattering on the hips. It's my favorite piece, along with the puff-sleeve blouse…I have no idea how I thought of it, but Brigitte Bardot was never far from my mind." Continuing the Essex vibe, each suit is named in the tradition of the town — Denise, Kerry, Tracey, Sharon and Debbie.
The collection, which launched yesterday, already has a line-up of fashion luminaries ready to dive into the nearest pool or sea. "Leandra Medine has the white ruffle Denise swim, Yasmin Sewell requested the Debbie in yellow. Suki Waterhouse asked for a bunch of bespoke costumes for her and Cara [Delevingne] to wear at Cara's birthday in Brazil — so we made up a Tracey bikini and a Denise swim in yellow and green to reflect the Brazilian flag!"
