Interview: Sophia Webster On Her ‘80s Dance-Inspired Collection With Puma

The latest drop from Sophia Webster X Puma brings together the luxury footwear designer’s frivolous, irreverent and quirky creations, paired with Puma’s sporty sensibility for a collection littered with sassy, sartorial nuances from Generation Me. The result? Well, read ahead to find out…

Harper’s BAZAAR Arabia: What was the inspiration behind this collection?
Sophia Webster: My third collection with Puma was dance-inspired with a lot of references to the ‘80s. I wanted it to feel like it was straight from that time period, but styled for the modern day. I used lots of colour-blocking techniques, updated logos and bold prints to bring a new energy to this collection. I love experimenting with colour, so I used a mix of stand-out neons and pastel hues. There’s a range of tees, crews and crop tops alongside tights and shorts.

HBA: How do you think the Puma woman and Sophia Webster woman go hand-in-hand?
SW: Puma and I have the same spirit in that we want to create product that not only looks great, but makes women feel empowered. I wanted this collection to reflect the way I design by offering variety, from individual statement pieces that you can not wear to dance and exercise or casual everyday wear.

HBA: What was the best part of designing this collection?
SW: I loved introducing kids’ shoes to this collection, especially the basket sneaker in iridescent glitter that matches the women’s version. I have three daughters, so entering the children’s apparel market for the first time was a really exciting opportunity. I love dressing my girls in the pieces. I have enjoyed the design process so much and feel super proud of the collection.

HBA: The sneakers are a mix of sporty and glam. What are your styling tips on how to wear them?
SW: What I love about the sneakers in this collection is they do both. I love the Thunder platform sneakers - they are my favourites to date. The elasticated frilly trim and chunky colour-blocked sole pair perfectly with the mesh white shorts and tee. I wear the Suedes and Cali sneakers day to day around the office with denim dungarees or a cute co-ord set.
