Why Chopard’s Mermaid-Worthy Laguna Watch Is Top Of Our Wishlist

An underwater-inspired masterpiece is the latest triumph to emerge from Chopard’s Red Carpet Collection of magnificent jewels

Chopard’s Red Carpet Collection is always in a league of its own – its creations are some of the most opulent pieces ever made by the historic Swiss maison – but its newest treasure hails from many leagues under the sea. Nominated for the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève 2024, the Laguna high jewellery watch flaunts its own underwater universe, brought to life in saccharine shades of pastel sapphires, plenty of diamonds, and one perfect pearl.

The Laguna’s watch face is buried under a sea of diamonds, sapphires, emeralds and garnets

Chopard’s master craftsmen spent over 1,000 hours adorning its tropical seabed with 18-karat pink gold clams, miniature urchins, and charming conch shells, each handcrafted and exquisitely embellished. Vibrant tones of titanium echo the sea creatures’ natural lustre, with painstaking detail given to their curves and contours, while emeralds, green demantoid, and mandarin garnets capture the kaleidoscopic colours of the ocean floor.

Conceived by co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele, this glittering creation was designed to catch the eye, yet simultaneously hold a precious secret at its heart. The cuff contains a time-telling surprise – a petite watch dial embellished with marquise cut pink sapphires – cleverly concealed within a scintillating clam. Our verdict? It’s ab-shell-utely fabulous.
