Elsa Peretti’s Designs for Tiffany&Co. Are Reimagined in A 50th Anniversary Collection
The Italian jewellery designer’s most famous creations play muse to a series of new pieces, each one more breath-taking than the last
Few pieces of jewellery are as iconic as the Elsa Peretti Bone Cuff. The bold and body-intuitive design wasn’t, however, Elsa’s only triumph for Tiffany&Co. – her Open Heart, Bean and Diamonds by the Yard collections have also become some of the most instantly recognisable jewellery designs of the 20th century.
The Italian model, philanthropist and trailblazer first collaborated with the American titan in September 1974, pouring her passion for nature and organic forms into every piece and developing a visual language that felt avant-garde then, but still feels revolutionary now.
Blending science-like precision with her innate flair for sculpture, her tactile designs were designed to drape the body and echo its every contour, resulting in ultra-sensual treasures like the world had never seen. Elsa’s audacious design codes were as emotive as they were elegant, inspiring a generation of women to buy jewellery for themselves, rather than wait for any man.
The craftswoman – her preferred title – said her design philosophy was guided by common sense, famously abiding by the mantra, “For me, good line and good form are timeless.” With examples of her work now residing in the permanent collections of many illustrious museums around the world, it seems she was right.
This year marks 50 years since the creative partnership began, and in an ode to her enduring legacy, Tiffany has dressed some of her signature creations in glittering pavé diamonds and gemstones, with some reimagined on an even bolder scale. There is no doubt that Peretti’s pieces will continue to serve as a constant inspiration for generations to come – among style mavens, she is loved to the bone.
