Why Pearl Jewellery Should Be Top Of Your New Season Wishlist
Three fine jewellers explain their love of lustrous pearls, inspired by their natural beauty and contemporary charm
Pearls have a rich and storied history, reaching back thousands of years to circa 2000 BC. Revered by ancient civilisations across the globe, they often symbolised wealth and royalty, and were prized for their delicate lustre. In time, and with the advent of pearl diving, they became an important trade commodity during the 8th-14th centuries, fuelling trade routes between Europe and India, and they soon became a prominent motif within Islamic art and culture.
Natural pearls are now scarce and extraordinarily valuable, while cultured pearls have become omnipresent, allowing fine jewellery designers to experiment with both classic and contemporary designs. In the mid-twentieth century, pearls became synonymous with prim and proper styling, but by the dawn of the millennium, pearls were moving into a new, edgier era—designers began to slice, gild and stud them to create modern, minimalist and fashion-forward pieces of pearl jewellery.
Why Pearl Jewellery Should Be Top Of Your New Season Wish List
Here, Bazaar Arabia speaks to three pearl jewellery designers offering their own take on cool and contemporary pearl jewellery, to suit minimalists and maximalists alike.
Jacquie Aiche, founder of Jacquie Aiche
“Pearls carry a life force energy within them, and I believe that alone has the power to make them incredibly captivating. The classic beaded pearl necklace has such an iconic history behind it—it’s become a symbol of glamour and elegance. I love pairing them with a new type of energy that feels true to the tribe. Of course, I’ll keep it classic with beaded pearl necklaces, but our uniqueness comes through in adding a playful element into the mix. Whether that be gemstones, or motifs that inspire something more. Trust your taste. If there’s a specific strand of pearls that is calling to you, or a talisman that feels like it’s meant to be in your collection—follow that feeling.”

Fatma Hamad Al Ketbi, founder of FHK by Style Gallery
“I believe a pearl ring is a timeless staple for every woman. One of the most captivating features of my pearl designs uses the most miniature pearls that wrap gently around the finger. Each piece is crafted to be intricate yet delicate, so it’s perfect whether you are dressing up for a special occasion or just adding a touch of elegance to your everyday look. Each one shines on its own, but when combined, they create a layered, sophisticated look that feels uniquely yours.”
Kaltham Al Majid, founder of Kaltham’s Pavilion
“I believe pearl studs are essential pieces in any jewellery collection, as they embody femininity, and exude a regal elegance. Their simplicity and sophistication make them a staple that can enhance any look—in my design approach, I like to mix modern and classic elements. One of my most popular pieces is the Pearl Under Lotus ring, where the pearl is uniquely positioned beneath the band, which creates a classic look with a modern twist. I also love combining pearls with coloured gemstones, adding a distinctive and playful touch to each creation.”
