Why Serapian’s Modern Classic Is A Handbag Icon In The Making…
The fabled leather goods maker, famous for its signature Mosaico weave, unveils its 1928 bag
Serapian’s new 1928 bag is as much a tribute to the past as a vision for the future. It also stays true to its legacy. 1928 is when founder Stefano Serapian opened his Milanese atelier, before the words ‘fashion capital’ were ever uttered or a major catwalk show had ever been staged.
Nearly a century later, this bold and ultra-modern reinterpretation of the signature Mosaico weave, speaks to an independent, dynamic muse who embodies the sort of artistic allure that attracts the international jetset to Italy’s business and design hub.

An icon in the making, a maxi version of the Mosaico weave in soft nappa stripes, render this latest model one of the most intriguing yet. Substantial precious stones like malachite, rhodochrosite or amethyst punctuate the centre of the bag, creating a symmetrical embellishment that plays with textural depth.

The Milanese house and family-run company was acquired by Compagnie Financière Richemont in 2017. With this new leadership, Serapian continues to write the modern chapter of its fabled history that once captivated A-list movie stars like Audrey Hepburn and Ingrid Bergman. Yet it remains endeared to its past – one that started with the union of Stefano and his wife, Gina Flori, who would also become his business partner.

Outfitted with impeccable details and sleek, geometric arrangements, Serapian’s latest range brings to the fore the sort of Made in Italy approach currently being recognised in one of the most elite artisanal arenas of all – the ongoing Homo Faber Crafting A More Human Future 2022 exhibit in Venice. It is an event that reunites the world’s top craftspeople.

So it’s no wonder Serapian’s artisans have been invited to share the brand’s signature Mosaico weave on this global stage, as well as present other icons from the house like the Secret bag so that modern collectors can appreciate the extent of this brand’s expertise in the art of creating luxury leather accessories.

The 1928 comes in two sizes and is available in calming, creamy hues of mint, cream, beige, and khaki, as well as classic black. It can also be customised on request. Proving once again that Serapian is committed to both craftsmanship and the desires of its discerning clientele.
