From Saudi to the UAE, the students of the Middle East are making strides for the community on a global scale

Dubbed the world’s most diverse gathering of graduate ideas — the Global Grad Show is a celebration of ideas that can revolutionize the world as we know it.

Currently in its sixth year, the show has seen an increase in submissions with entries from universities among the likes of Harvard and Imperial College.

With a record eight projects from Middle Eastern universities making the shortlist into the top 100, the students of the Middle East have showcased the very best of the region.

For the first time, the Global Grad Show has also incorporated a multimedia and interactive exhibition, further expanding their reach and bringing the show to global audiences worldwide.

This year, the prestigious show will focus on five key emerging trends as follows.

Living with Illness & Disability, Coping in a Complex World, Saving Lives in Danger, Cleaning a Waste Filled Planet, and Sustaining the Urban Experience.

From the Dubai Institute of Design & Innovation in UAE emerged the idea to create a light that allowed its user to reach out to those around them for help during a crisis.

Additionally, from the German University in Cairo in Egypt, students came up with the idea to create an eco-friendly font the government could use for official business which saves ink whilst reducing the use of plastic cartridges.

Another project from the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation uses date seeds to create materials that can be used in textiles, biodegradable food containers and even cosmetics!

Students from the American University of Sharjah took inspiration from their home country and came up with a prototype to showcase a structure that creates clean water through the process of desalination.

These projects, amongst the others that made the shortlist will be displayed through a digital exhibition where visitors will be able to view prototypes, research material and more that pertain to current world issues.

Moreover, the participants of the show will be invited to apply to the new division of the Entrepreneurship Programme, which has been responsible for facilitating 30 projects to date. This includes projects ranging from mental health to migrating communities and more.

The MENA Grad Show will also showcase projects in the field of science, design and technology while connecting professors and students from the region with those worldwide.
