How Two Khloé Kardashian-Approved Home Styling Gurus Are Changing the Way We Organise Our Closets
Founded by Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin, The Home Edit is taking over Instagram feeds worldwide with their colour-coded style…
Two women in America are revolutionising the way we think about home organisation by syncing (rainbow coloured) form with function.
Introducing The Home Edit…
Founded by Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin, which came together by their love of pure design and order…
A favourite among celebrities–you can count Reese Witherspoon, Rachel Zoe and, of course, Khloé in the mix–their homegrown method has its own show, Get Organized with The Home Edit on Netflix. Each episode features Shearer and Teplin knee deep in a pantry or child’s room, organising and colour coordinating the mess away with their handwritten labels. Witherspoon even entrusted the pair to organise her treasured movie memorabilia; from Legally Blonde to Big Little Lies, the actress’s costumes were categorised by colour, leaving behind a closet worthy of the Costume Institute. With 5 million followers and counting, The Home Edit has grown with every photogenic closet and ombre shoe wall Instagram post.
When asked about the method behind their colour coded madness, Shearer and Teplin agreed it was part magic and part function. “Our philosophy is finding that magical sweet spot that exists where spaces are efficient, user-friendly, and aesthetically pleasing all at once. It not only makes sections of your home more enjoyable to look at, but we’ve also found that sprinkling this extra layer of pixie dust inspires people to maintain these spaces— which is the whole point!”

Why rainbow? The duo’s answer was simple.
“It’s partially a design decision because things in rainbow order are pleasing to the eye, but even more importantly, we innately recognize this pattern, making it a natural scheme for making sense of where we put things. This method is effective for people who are highly visual…especially kids! Suddenly, cleanup is less of a chore and more of a sorting challenge or game.” It’s one thing to scroll through The Home Edit’s Instagram, and quite another to put Shearer and Teplin’s method to practice.Teplin offered some words of advice for starting any home organisation project.
“The biggest mistake we see first-time organizers make is thinking they need to tackle their entire house at once. It’s just not realistic and will leave you feeling overwhelmed. Instead, start with a drawer! The knowledge and confidence you gain from a smaller project will motivate you to tackle the larger portions.” Start small and soon you’ll find yourself with a closet full of pretty.
The true beauty of The Home Edit is the ability to translate the process to any part of the home while evoking a sense of calm at setting order to chaos–a welcomed feeling considering the pandemic stressors we’re all feeling. Anyone, anywhere can do it.

“Well, now that we’re in our spaces more than ever before, something that you might have written off like ‘whatever, I’ll get to it later’ can really start to bother you. Creating functional systems that also look beautiful gives people a chance to feel calmer and more in control….which is what we are all looking for.” says Shearer.
With Covid-19 taking control of our social lives, it’s nice knowing we have a say in our surroundings…After all, who knew home organisation can be a form of picture perfect luxury?
