And The Oscar Goes To…Here Are Last Night’s Winners For The 95th Academy Awards
Glam, glitz, and a Will Smith joke for Hollywood’s most star-studded event of the year
Arguably one of the most glamorous nights of the cinematic verse, the 95th Academy Awards kept the drama onscreen this year.
Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the comedian couldn’t help but poke fun at the ‘slap heard round the world,’ when Will Smith hit then Oscar emcee, Chris Rock on stage last year. “We want you to have fun, we want you to be safe, and most importantly, we want me to be safe. If anyone commits an act of violence anytime during this show, you will be presented the Oscar for Best Actor and be permitted to give an 18-minute long speech,” quipped Jimmy. The American comedian went so far as bringing Jenny, an emotional support donkey from the film, The Banshees of Inisherin with James Martin and Colin Farrell for added support.
Jokes aside, the evening was uneventfully eventful, emphasising the importance — and magic — of storytelling. Everything Everywhere All At Once paved the way, winning a total of five Oscars, including the coveted Best Picture award.
Performance-wise, an invigorating number from the film, RRR, set the stage alight. Introduced by the beautiful Deepika Padukone wearing Louis Vuitton, audiences were mesmerized. “In addition to being sung in Telegu and illustrating the film’s anti-colonist themes, it’s also a total banger!” jested Padukone. Performed by Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj, “Naatu Naatu,” was met with a standing ovation and an Oscar win.

Other performances included a rousing rendition of “Hold My Hand” by Lady Gaga. Dressed down in a classic black t-shirt and jeans, Gaga shared left her heart on stage. “It’s deeply personal for me and I think we all need each other. We need a lot of love to walk through this life. And we all need a hero sometimes. There are heroes all around us in unassuming places but you might find that you can be your own hero even if you feel broken inside,” said Gaga as she introduced her original song written for Top Gun.
A first for Oscar night, Jimmy led a live Q&A with questions sent for audience members to answer. Starting with Malala Yousafzai, who was in attendance in support of her nominated documentary, Strangers at the Gate, Kimmel asked, “Do you think Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine?” Wearing a glistening Ralph Lauren gown, Yousafzai’s answer was diplomatic and to the point with a hint of fun. “I only talk about peace,” she said with a grin.
Shortly thereafter Rihanna stunned on stage with “Lift Me Up,” another original song nominated for the film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Encrusted with streams of crystals, the songstress quite literally lifted up over the audiences, reminiscent of her Super Bowl halftime performance in February.

The moment we were all waiting for…the last few awards held at the very end of the evening. The air was was palpable as Jessica Chastain and Halle Berry presented the winners for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Leading Role. Brendan Fraser won for his transformative performance in The Whale. “So this is what the multiverse looks like?!” exclaimed Fraser. Best Actress went to Michelle Yeoh for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once. In her speech, Yeoh encouraged the dreamers of the world saying, “This is for all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this (holding her Oscar) is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof that dreams do come true. And ladies don’t let anyone ever tell you, you’re past your prime! Never give up!”
Without further ado, here’s a list of all the winners and nominees for the 95th Annual Academy Awards.
