Eid al-Adha 2024: How Many Days Off Will the Private Sector Have in The UAE?

The UAE is looking forward to a significant 13 days of public holidays coming up. After Ramadan and the subsequent 9 holiday for Eid al-Fitr, the next long weekend looks to take place in June for the Eid Al-Adha.

What is Eid al-Adha?

As the second of the two main holidays celebrated in Islam, Eid al-Adha is a celebration that commemorates the Prophet Abraham’s devotion to God. Muslim’s honour this event by taking part in acts of worship, giving charity, and gathering together for a meal, which usually consists of lamb, mutton, or beef.

Why do Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha is a significant day for Muslims across the globe. It falls on the 10th to the 12th of Dhu-al-Hijjah – the 12th month in the Islamic Lunar Calendar – and marks the end of the week-long Holy Pilgrimage to Mecca.

The pilgrimage, which usually occurs on day 8-12 of the month, also includes Arafat Day, which falls a day before Eid al-Adha, and is commemorated as a public holiday in the UAE.

When is Eid al-Adha 2024?

This year, Eid al-Adha is expected to occur on Sunday, June 16 to Tuesday June 18 2024, pending the moon sighting.

How Many Days Will We Get Off for Eid al-Adha?

UAE residents can look forward to a potential four-day weekend. Arafat Day will fall on Saturday, June 15, while Eid al-Adha will be celebrated from Sunday, June 16. Monday, June 17 and Tuesday, June 18 will also be given as public holidays in the region.

As the Islamic months are subject to the moon sighting, the exact dates of these holidays in the Gregorian calendar are to be confirmed by UAE officials closer to the time.
