Gucci Announces Demna As Its New Artistic Director
Demna will join the maison in July 2025, hailing from Balenciaga, where he has presided since 2015
Following the shock announcement today that Donatella Versace is set to exit one of Italy’s most prominent maisons, the fashion industry has delivered another curveball – Gucci has announced Demna as its new artistic director, who has served as artistic director of Balenciaga since 2015.
François-Henri Pinault, chairman and CEO of Kering, expressed his enthusiasm for Demna’s appointment as Gucci’s new Artistic Director, stating: “Demna’s remarkable contributions to the industry, Balenciaga, and Kering’s overall success have been invaluable. His creative vision is exactly what Gucci needs at this pivotal moment. As I thank him for his outstanding work over the past decade, I am excited to see how he will shape Gucci’s artistic direction moving forward.”
Francesca Bellettini, Kering’s deputy CEO in charge of brand development, added: “Demna’s profound understanding of contemporary culture, combined with his vast experience in creating groundbreaking projects, has established him as one of the most influential and accomplished creatives of his generation. His appointment as artistic director is the perfect spark to reignite Gucci’s creative energy. I look forward to seeing the collaboration between Demna and Stefano as they guide Gucci into a new era of success.”
Stefano Cantino, CEO of Gucci, also shared his excitement about the new appointment: “I have long admired Demna’s unique and powerful creative approach. His ability to honor a brand’s iconic legacy while embracing a modern sensibility is exceptional. With Gucci’s solid foundations as a platform, Demna will lead the house towards renewed fashion authority and lasting cultural relevance.”
Demna, expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, said: “I am truly excited to join the Gucci family. It is an honour to contribute to a House that I deeply respect and have admired for many years. I look forward to collaborating with Stefano and the entire team to write a new chapter in Gucci’s extraordinary story.” Fashion’s most major maisons are yet, however, to complete what feels like the most elite game of musical chairs for creative direction – with the industry now awaiting who will succeed Demna at Balenciaga.
