History Of The Hero: Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540

The story behind today’s most talked-about fragrance

If there is one fragrance that has successfully captured the zeitgeist of today, it would be Baccarat Rouge 540 by Maison Francis Kurkdjian – the house of trailblazing master perfumer Francis Kurkdjian.

Steeped in stories – from the concept behind its limited run launch, to its authentic celebrity fan base and true TikTok virality – there are many more layers to it than the juice’s intriguing scent.

It was never intended to inspire the masses, though. “In January 2016, we launched Baccarat Rouge 540, an eau de parfum born from the encounter between Maison Francis Kurkdjian and Baccarat, as a celebration of the 250th anniversary of the iconic crystal house,” Kurkdjian reflects. “It launched as a limited edition, in 250 numbered crystal bottles,” With the idea being to embody the essence of Baccarat fine crystal, as Kurkdjian explains, the name Rouge 540 “evokes a metamorphosis of a clear crystal mingled with 24-carat gold powder, gradually brought to fusion at 540 degrees Celsius, arousing a glowing red appearance, which Baccarat calls ‘rouge à l’or’,” – or golden red.

“We knew it was an exceptional fragrance, so we decided about a year later to include it in the Maison’s olfactory wardrobe. The first batch, meant to cover our supply for six months, sold out in less than a month.” This was the start of a cultural phenomenon in fragrance.

So, what does Baccarat Rouge 540 actually smell like? “I imagined it as a poetic alchemy where the aerial notes of jasmine and the radiance of saffron carry mineral facets of ambergris and woody tones of a freshly cut cedar wood,” Kurkdjian says. It’s a gourmand scent, meaning its aroma is almost edible, but it balances a heady, moreish sweetness with savoury, which steers it in another direction. He tells Bazaar, “It’s gourmand with a unique twist that has never been done before”. The “twist” is an overdose of rich ambroxan, the synthetic version of ambergris, which gives the mouth-watering syrupiness an umami property. The result is “powerful and distinguished,” he says, adding that it has “a persistent and potent sillage” – referring to the trail it leaves by the wearer. This distinguishing factor, too, is part of its appeal.

And then there’s Rihanna. The person to propel Baccarat Rouge 540 into mainstream conversation, reports that it was her favourite perfume (before launching her own Fenty fragrance) fuelled ongoing conversations around how heavenly she smells, as well as our collective obsession with discovering the guarded beauty secrets of celebrities – not only the ones they’re handsomely paid to share.

But it wasn’t until TikTok blew up that Baccarat Rouge 540 really cemented its cult status. Of course, given how perfume is profoundly linked to culture, social media has had a great impact on the fragrance industry today, and the platform has played a mouthpiece for the product. From descriptions of it “smelling like being rich” to being “the most complimented perfume ever”, and endless reviews of its dupes, videos tagged ‘Baccarat Rouge’ currently boast 248 million views on the social media platform. It’s symbolic of the ultimate modern-day word of mouth trend, which boggles given that you can’t actually smell via the internet.

It’s surreal, Kurkdjian tells Bazaar. “When I see that one of my scents is becoming iconic, up to a point where it can create such a buzz, it’s a bit like someone else has done it for me,” Certainly, it proves the power of social media, but it’s also testament to the virtuosity of arguably the most exciting perfumer of our time. After all, Kurkdjian – who also wears the hat of perfume creation director at Christian Dior Parfums – composed global best-seller Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier age just 25 and has achieved many more celebrated creations throughout his prolific career to date, from Narciso Rodriguez for Her to My Burberry.

It’s clearly a combination of factors that makes Baccarat Rouge 540 his most talked-about masterpiece. Somehow, its £200+ price tag (that many, of course, can’t afford) only serves to make it more coveted, and Baccarat Rouge 540 is now big business for Kurkdjian’s brand – it’s also captured in luxuriant scented accessory items including a hair mist, body oil, body cream and candle.

Perhaps what’s most refreshing about its success, though, is that it wasn’t orchestrated to be this way. As he tells Bazaar about the making of a classic, “It’s always easier to predict it afterwards”.
