Inside the Opening of Juliet Makhlouf’s Ancestry Exhibition

Juliet Makhlouf traces the living memory of ancient civilisations with a striking presentation of her works

Last Saturday evening, Oblong Gallery in Al Quoz opened its doors to Ancestry, a solo exhibition by a Syrian artist Juliet Makhlouf, drawing a thoughtful crowd of cultural voices from across Dubai. The opening unfolded with a sense of reverence – revealing an exhibition rooted in memory, heritage, and the enduring imprint of ancient civilisations. It also set the tone – not just an exhibition launch, but a quiet act of remembrance that invites viewers to reflect on the invisible thread connecting past to present.

Set within Oblong Gallery’s clean, contemplative space, Ancestry immediately invited visitors into Makhlouf’s reflective world. Her works, rich in texture and symbolic reference, and narratives that form the foundations of human history. Rather than offering literal depictions, Makhlouf’s visual language suggested traces of civilisations than once shaped belief systems, trade, communication, and art, whose influence continues to ripple through time. “Admiring ancestors is to pay tribute to their precious contribution that will never be erased,” Makhlouf comments. “Despite mass destruction, their surviving works are filled with beauty, love, and meaning. Their stories have crossed all borders toward the entire humanity.”

The opening night was intimate, allowing viewers to admire the work as they lingered in front of them. Makhlouf, whose career spans more than four decades across the Middle East and Europe, was present at the opening. Her practice, shaped by years of teaching and exhibiting in Syria, Qatar, and the UAE, made her an artist bearing witness across generations.
