Is Barbie Banned in Kuwait?
Bazaar Arabia shares what we know about the latest developments regarding the film’s regional release…
The controversies surrounding Greta Gerwig’s Barbie are not ending any time soon either, as Kuwait has become the latest country to impose a ban on the film in order to protect “public ethics and social traditions.”
Kuwait’s local news reports the ban being imposed as Lafi Al-Subaie, the chairman of the film censorship committee, has accused the film of “carrying ideas that encourage unacceptable behaviour and distort society’s values.”
The news follows just a day after recent talks of the possibility of banning the film in Lebanon as well.
With a recent statement from the culture minister Mohammad Mortada claiming that Barbie “promotes homosexuality and sexual transformation” and “contradicts values of faith and morality” by diminishing the importance of the family unit.
