Juliet Makhlouf Unveils the Soul of Syrian Heritage at Oblong Gallery
Where ancient clay meets modern canvas – Juliet Makhlouf reclaims the narrative of the Arab world in her most profound exhibition yet
Esteemed artist Juliet Makhlouf is set to unveil her latest solo exhibition, “Ancestry”, at the prestigious Oblong Contemporary Art Gallery in Dubai. Running from January 24 to February 8, her solo exhibition marks a significant milestone in the career of an artist who has long been a pillar of the Middle Eastern creative community. Against Dubai’s rapidly evolving art scene, “Ancestry” arrives as a timely exploration of the threads that bind our past to our present, promising to be the definitive cultural exhibition this season.
Born in Syria in 1957, Juliet graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Graphic Department at the University of Damascus in 1981. After her studies, she taught art at secondary schools in Syria, Qatar, and the UAE while developing her own artistic style and exhibiting her work across the region. Dedicated to both creation and education, Juliet refines the cultural legacy of the Arab world through a deeply reflective body of work.
“Ancestry” represents a culmination of this lifelong pursuit, meticulously crafted paintings that move beyond the purely decorative- seeking to explore the living presence of our identities. Through her art, ancestry is not a static concept rooted in history books, but a vibrant, pulse-like energy that bridges the past and the present. These works draw deeply from the rich soil of Syrian history and the broader Mesopotamian legacy. By weaving these historical threads into large-scale, colourful compositions, she creates a space where the specific cultural memory of the Levant meets a universal human narrative of resilience and continuity.
Beyond the glamour of its opening night, the exhibition offers a rare and tangible opportunity for the region’s most discerning collectors. For those who follow the trajectory of Middle Eastern contemporary art, the chance to view pieces from her collection begins January 24 through February 8. Continuing to cement her status as a global artist, Juliet Makhlouf’s “Ancestry” stands as a testament to the depth and brilliance of the talent that calls this region home.
