Palais Royal: Harper’s Bazaar Arabia Escapes to Shangri-La Paris
The Shangri-La Paris is a firm favourite of the world’s most discerning fashion editors
Even the most blasé visitor has to take a moment when confronted with the Eiffel Tower, whether its twinkling at night or gleaming in the sunlight. And given that’s a sight guests at the Shangri-La see framed by windows and from bathtubs and balconies throughout the day, it’s a pretty strong calling card just to start off with. It never ceases to cast its romantic spell and make you fall in love – again – with the City of Lights.
And while the pedigree of the Shangri-La Paris might be from the Far East (with a plaudit-garnering Southern Chinese restaurant, Shang Palace), this particular property has an undeniably French lineage. After all, it is set within an opulent palace – think gilded mirrors, silk wallpaper, majestic drawing rooms and ornate woven carpets in the common areas – that once belonged to Price Roland Bonaparte, Napoleon’s great nephew. It’s a grand place to call home in this fashion capital, even gaining French Historical Monument status.

Once you check in, you’ll find the aesthetic of its 100 rooms are more pared-back and neutral – though no less luxurious for it. Expensive furnishings and finishing touches still feature throughout, but in a more muted palette. Bathrooms impress just as much as the rooms, with heated floors, double sinks and deep baths throughout. Think the space looks familiar? The expansive terraced suites (there are just five in this boutique-style hotel) have had pride of place in social media posts from the likes of Beyoncé and husband Jay-Z.
Another highlight? Shangri-La Paris has arguably one of the best pampering hubs in the city – and definitely the biggest swimming pool – at the Chi spa, tucked away on a subterranean level. The city’s residents consider this an insider spot too. You’ll find power-meetings and family celebrations taking place at the excellent seafood-centric La Bauhinia – where an East-meets-West breakfast is also served – bathed in the light from the glass dome overhead. Or if you’re lucky you’ll be able to get table in the lush garden in the summer; there’s no better place to toast the Eiffel Tower towering majestically just in front.

Don’t miss: Modern art fans should make a pilgrimage to Bourse de Commerce which features over 10,000 pieces from the Pinault Collection. See work by names like Cy Twombly, Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons in a spectacular space restored by architect Tadao Ando. @boursedecommerce
