The Glitterati Guru: Misha Daud Advises How To Style An Oversized Watch
Watch and jewellery expert Misha Daud is our sparkle-centric agony aunt answering your questions on how to style a supersized watch
When wearing a jumbo watch, what is the correct watch-to-bracelet ratio – the bigger the watch, the fewer bracelets?
There are no rules per se, but balanced proportions always matter in my book. Think of it as framing – a very petite wrist has less room, so piling on too many chunky pieces with a large Audemars Piguet Royal Oak or Rolex Daytona looks overwhelming. On a larger canvas, there’s more space to play with, so you can go bolder with both your watch and bracelets. The trick is to let your eye make the final call. Instinctively the best ratio is the one that makes you feel amazing when you look down at your wrist. If an over-the top stack feels great to you, that’s what makes it fabulous.

When wearing a chunky watch, is it better to wear it with fluid bracelets or structured bangles?
I prefer to wear structured bangles with a big watch, because the looser, fluid bracelets tend to get tangled underneath. Sometimes, however, I throw all my own advice out of the window and mix both! But that’s the beauty of watch styling – nothing is set in stone, and changing our minds and our style is a pleasure. It’s the only way that we discover what we truly like and what works for us. But if I had to push for a rule, I would always wear solid hardware bracelets with a chunky watch. It makes such a statement.

Are supersized watches still trending?
Absolutely! Iconic, oversized watches never go out of style. Sure, the small watch is seeing a revival, but so is wearing two watches together. When it comes to luxury timepieces, it’s not about following trends, it’s about buying pieces that mean something and allow your wrist to tell your story. Trends fade, but great taste leaves a legacy.

Can you wear a boyfriend watch with a feminine outfit, or is it only cool when worn casually?
Sometimes, the size of the watch doesn’t matter – it’s the outfit that makes the difference. I may not wear a steel Daytona with a ballgown, but I have worn a large dial Cartier privé on many black tie occasions. I also think contrasts can be incredibly chic. It’s all about the attitude you bring to the look.
