Why was TikTok banned In Nepal? The social media platform, popular with Gen-Zers, may no longer be available in the country after a decision made by a Cabinet meeting on November 13 which highlighted growing concerns about hate speech being spread on the app, negatively affecting the Nepali population.

Why Was TikTok Banned In Nepal?
According to local sources have indicated a concerning surge in cybercrime cases associated with the app, totaling over 1,600 reported incidents within the country over the past four years.
According to a Reuters report, Purushottam Khanal, the head of the Nepali Telecom Authority, revealed that the government has issued a directive to internet service providers, instructing them to block access to to the social media app. Some providers have already complied with the directive, while others will swiftly follow.
The Cabinet has also made it compulsory for all popular social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and X, to open liaison offices in Nepal, ensuring that they pay taxes and abide by the country’s laws and regulations.

In 2020, India implemented a ban on TikTok and several other social media platforms developed by Chinese companies over security concerns.
The application has also faced multiple bans in Pakistan, with the government citing “immoral and indecent” content on the platform.
In March of this year, legislators in the United States made TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew testify in front of Congress, as some lawmakers pushed to ban the app.
