Vacheron Constantin Rounds Out Its Jubilant 270th Year

A journey of innovation, heritage and artistry, from Watches & Wonders to the Louvre and the Middle East, Mastering Time for 270 Years: Inside Vacheron Constantin’s Global Celebration

Breaking world records, filing new patents, unveiling a monumental clock at the Louvre, and staging celebrations across three cities, this is how Vacheron Constantin, the world’s oldest watchmaker in continuous activity, marked its 270th anniversary. And from a brand whose motto is “Do better if possible, and that is always possible,” nothing less than the extraordinary was expected. The celebrations began in April at Watches & Wonders, where Vacheron Constantin introduced Solaria, its latest haute horlogerie marvel. Housing an extraordinary 41 complications – from a Westminster minute repeater to advanced solar and celestial indications – the timepiece compresses 1,521 components into a remarkably wearable 45mm case. It was already an exceptional way to open a jubilee year, but it was only the beginning.

The gala dinner

On 16 September, the maison gathered collectors, clients and journalists in Paris, at the cathedral of French excellence, the Louvre. There, it unveiled La Quête du Temps, a monumental astronomical automaton clock presented as the centrepiece of the museum’s exhibition Mécaniques d’Art. Standing over a metre tall and composed of more than 6,000 components, the piece took seven years to complete and carries 15 patents – seven for its watchmaking mechanisms and eight for the automaton.

Displayed alongside historical masterpieces, including an 18th-century astronomical clock created for Louis XV and restored by Vacheron Constantin’s artisans, La Quête du Temps positioned the maison as a guardian as well as a contemporary contributor to the history of mechanical art.

The automaton also served as the anchor for the celebration. It inspired a Métiers d’Art “Tribute to the Quest of Time” wristwatch, a 20-piece limited edition translating its celestial narrative into wearable form.

Following the unveiling, guests attended a private dinner at the Louvre, held beneath marble figures of mythological characters. The next morning, they boarded a Vacheron Constantin-branded train bound for Geneva.

There, the festivities continued with a nocturnal visit to the manufacture, where watchmakers welcomed guests to the sound of classical musicians performing among the workbenches. The programme included a guided tour of the maison’s storied archives, home to some of its greatest masterpieces. Among these were the diamond-set Kalla watch adored by Elizabeth Taylor, as well as exquisite pendant watches showcasing Vacheron Constantin’s savoirfaire not only in watchmaking but also in setting gems, and magnificent table clocks adorned with motifs ranging from Art Deco to Asian and Middle Eastern influences.

The Geneva celebration took place precisely on 17 September, the exact date on which Jean-Marc Vacheron signed his first apprenticeship contract in 1755 – the document regarded as the starting point of the maison’s unbroken history.

Simultaneously, a pop-up exhibition opened at Pont de la Machine titled “The Quest: 270 Years of Seeking Excellence,” charting the evolution of the brand from 18th-century pocket watches to contemporary grand complications through a mix of archival pieces, technical displays and historical storytelling.

The anniversary then moved to Dubai in November, where the maison hosted a gala supported by Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism. The event brought together clients, collectors and regional tastemakers for an evening blending watchmaking showcases, live performances and immersive scenography that explored the themes of Heritage, Mastery, and Horizons, and showcased exceptional timepieces including the Grand Lady Kalla, Les Cabinotiers Celestia Astronomical Grand Complication 3600, and Métiers d’Art creations.

The event highlighted Vacheron Constantin’s longstanding connection to the Middle East and Dubai’s role as a strategic hub for spreading the joy of timepieces and cultivating an engaged community of watch enthusiasts and collectors. It showed that for Vacheron Constantin, the continuous quest for excellence is not only about doing better, but also about looking ahead, enjoying the journey, and having fun.
