Valentino Garavani: The Soul Of Italian Couture Has Passed Away At The Age Of 93
The Italian fashion designer passed away on January 19 at his home in Rome, surrounded by loved ones
In a world of more than 8.2 billion people, it is rare for one individual to be profoundly remembered, but Valentino Garavani is the embodiment of that rarity. He will be forever honoured for a lifelong legacy that defined Italian elegance, timeless couture, and an artistic vision that has reshaped the way we dress. A true maestro in every sense of the word.
Not only does the Maison lose its founding father, but the world also mourns one of the major couturiers of the 20th century. Launching his label in 1960, he spent his life dressing generations of women, with an eye for delicate details and unapologetically opulent styling. Perhaps most memorable, his signature red hue – one that will forever remain synonymous with Valentino.

In the span of just a few months, the world of fashion, has lost not one, but two founding fathers – Giorgio Armani and Valentino Garavani – who paved their way in the industry with a defined view on what great style should look like, each with their own blueprint.

Pouring his heart and soul into every endeavour, Valentino epitomised the qualities of a true designer, leader, and friend. His dresses spoke his language, one that translated into lasting relationships and celebrated the female form. One of his oldest friendships dates back to 1992, when he created Diana, Princess of Wales’s iconic velvet and lace dress, showcased at The Hong Kong Heartbeat Gala.

One of his most recent cherished friendships was with Anne Hathaway, whom he affectionately referred to as “like his daughter.”

The Maison released a statement honouring “il Signor Valentino” affirming the mark he left in the world of fashion, as a man of discipline, innovation, and enduring elegance.
“The Maison remembers Mr. Valentino Garavani with deep emotion and profound affection. His unique style and innate elegance will remain forever. We share with heartfelt sympathy the grief of his loved ones, and we remain committed to preserving and elevating the valued creative, cultural, and human heritage he entrusted to us, upon which Maison Valentino is founded. His life was a beacon in the ceaseless pursuit of beauty, and guided by that same beauty, we will continue to honor his memory with our deepest devotion. Thank you Mr. Valentino.”
The public will be able to pay their respects at PM23 in Piazza Mignanelli 23, on January 20 and January 22, from 11:00am to 18:00pm. The funeral will follow on January 23, at the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, in Piazza della Repubblica 8 in Rome, at 11:00am.
