Wednesday: The Addams Family Gets The Tim Burton Treatment In New Netflix Series Starring Catherine Zeta-Jones

According to Instagram posts shared by the cast, the official teaser of the latest rendition of this iconic ‘twisted tale’ is dropping soon

The Addams Family is returning to our screens this year, reinvented but as odd as ever, in a brand new Netflix series directed by, none other than, Tim Burton. Titled Wednesday, it stars Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, the macabre matriarch of the family; Luis Guzmán as Gomez, the father; and Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley, the younger of the two children. Jenna Ortega is stepping into the role of Wednesday Addams, the older Addams offspring and the titular character of the series.

Having been transformed for every platform, from the original comic that appeared in The New Yorker to film and even Broadway, the latest adaptation of the tale of an ominous and unconventional family that lives in a disconnect from how the world views them is truly a package for the 21st century audience owing to its release on a digital streaming platform.

Tim Burton, critically acclaimed director and certified master of gothic cinema, is the executive producer of the show and has directed four out of the eight episodes. Having previously dabbled in the genres of horror and fantasy, he seems to be the perfect fit for a family of outcasts such as the Addams, who are the epitome of the ‘other.’

Catherine Zeta-Jones looks every bit the part of Morticia, sporting her iconic pin-straight hair and sleek, black figure-hugging gown. Shadowy corners, dimly-lit rooms and every shade of black and white make up the world of the Addams, and more so of Wednesday, through whose lens we will witness death and darkness.

The premise of the series is set against the backdrop of a string of murders and revolves around Wednesday’s arrival at Nevermore Academy, a prestigious boarding school for outsiders, where she will navigate life as she transitions through teenage. She will continue to have her typical disdain for her family’s unlimited cheer, a weird juxtaposition to their gloomy personas. This is the weirdest family after all.

The show premieres on Netflix later this year and we reckon it’ll give us an excuse to embrace a little absurdity ourselves.

Stay tuned for further updates.
