Disney’s New Global Campaign Debuts Empowering Images Of Jordanian Schoolgirls

Back for a second year, Disney’s initiative aims to promote leadership in young women around the world. The brand have tapped 19 female photographers from 15 different countries to create a series of inspiring images that will be shared on social media to help raise funds for Girl Up, the United Nations Foundation’s program supporting leadership and empowerment amongst adolescent girls.

“The idea that stories—whether real life or fictional, like those of Belle or Rapunzel—can inspire kids to follow their dreams is at the heart of the #DreamBigPrincess campaign,” said Jimmy Pitaro, Chairman, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media. “We asked some of the most accomplished female photographers to help tell the stories of inspiring women and girls from around the world—and the results are incredible. We can’t wait for kids everywhere to see how powerful dreams can be.

Amongst the creatives is Jordanian-based Banan Alawneh, who has photo-profiled five little girls from the Queen Rania Family and Child Center as part of the #DreamBigPrincess campaign.

"When I was approached to be part of the #DreamBigPrincess initiative I thought of all the young girls who are underprivileged but had so much potential,” explains Alawneh. “The Queen Rania Family and Child Center, which was established under The Jordan River Foundation, gives them support through community programs and specialized facilities. I was inspired by the community centre, which offers holistic services that aim to help children and strengthen families across Jordan, kids enrol in these activities to stimulate and express their feelings through art.”

From 16 August to 16 October, every time one of the images is shared on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #DreamBigPrincess, Disney will donate $1 to the United Nations Foundation’s Girl Up campaign. The goal is to raise $1 million for the foundation.

“Girl Up envisions a world where every girl can reach her full potential and be an advocate within her community for positive change and empowerment. The #DreamBigPrincess campaign is perfectly aligned with our goals and we’re excited to partner with Disney and this incredible group of women to spotlight what it means to dream big around the world,” says Melissa Kilby, Director of Girl Up.
