Mercury will be going into transit over the UAE later this afternoon, and Dubai Astronomy Group has organised a special event to view the rare astronimcal alignment from 4pm onwards at Al Thuraya Astronomy Centre.
From 4:35pm onwards this afternoon, Mercury will become a visible black dot over the sun's disc as it makes the rare passage between the sun and the earth. The next Mercury Transit is not expected to occur until November 2032.
Observers in the UAE can observe a small black dot moving across the disk of the sun for around 58 minutes. However, viewers are advised not to view the rare celestial event without filters or proper protection, and are advised to take precaution when looking directly at the sun.
