In a time when social media continues to spark much debate on whether it’s existence as a concept is humanity’s greatest hindrance or a necessary part of modern culture, you can bet your bottom dirham that Instagram would be the ones to prove the latter thanks to an ingeniously heart-warming concept to break through the noise.
Calling on the global community to celebrate and share kindness on its platform, there is a new and inspiring hashtag you can expect to start seeing flooding your feed over the Holy Month. Building on behaviour last year between the first and last days of Ramadan, when Instagram noted over 15m feed posts about Holy Month, the social media giant is asking its followers to tag their shared acts of kindness and celebration with #MonthOfGood.
Emirati fitness influencer, Essa Al Ansari recently posted about the campaign:
What’s more, to coincide with the campaign, the social platform has launched its first ever Ramadan camera effect “Lantern”, featuring subtle bokeh and crescent shapes inspired by the ornamental arabesque design style - traditionally associated with Ramadan - to encourage members to share their festivities and acts of kindness with that ever welcome sprinkle of Instagram magic.

But before you go running off to donate your life’s possessions to a charity organization for that all-important snap, you don’t have to go big to make a difference (not unless you want to anyway!). An act of kindness can be anything from something as simple as posting positive comments on friends’ or colleagues’ social channels, thanking friends and family for iftar or suhoor; to volunteering within your community and sharing it as an example to others to be conscious and kind.
Commenting on the launch of the campaign and filter, Samer Jamal, Strategic Partner Manager, MENA at Instagram said, “Kindness does not have to be a grand gesture. In fact, small and unexpected acts can have a huge impact on someone’s day. That’s why we’re delighted to launch #MonthOfGood and our first ever Ramadan camera effect so that people on Instagram have a fun and creative way to express their good deeds and celebrations this Holy Month. We can’t wait to be inspired by the acts of kindness – big and small – shared by the Instagram community this Ramadan.”
Tapping “share” has never felt so good.
