Making weekend brunch plans? Let us direct you to the 5th floor of The Palms opulent W Hotel. Make your way through the darkened lobby and dimly lit elevator and you’ll find yourself in a space that is anything but: Akira Back. The eponymous restaurant describes its entrance as “a vortex, bringing you closer to heaven”, a flex you’ll see is entirely earned the second you taste the tuna tataki.
The space itself is light, open and deeply personal to the Michelin starred chef. His global portfolio of twelve restaurants all include a painting from his mother, and the strings of lights that hang in tiger stripes across the walls pay homage to Akira’s zodiac sign. Look beyond the dramatic interiors and you’ll find panoramic views of Dubai’s sweeping skyline, that thanks to astute staggered seated is visible from every seat in the house.
Once you’re relaxed into your seat and chosen from a selection of wines, beers, cocktails and soft drinks, prepare yourself and taste buds for the food.
The menu is devised in a buffet style format however, as the welcoming waiters will explain, this is not a finger sandwich and miniature sausage roll affair. Instead, expect an unlimited yet elevated selection of Korean fused Japanese fare. After working your way through the myriad of sushi be sure to sample the starring tuna “pizza”, a thin, cracker-like base covered in tuna sashimi. The spinach salad is proportionally creamy and light and the salty edamame beans were made to be washed down with a sake cocktail.
Exercising restraint won’t be easy, but, (if you can) do. These are just the appetisers and your choice of main courses still awaits. The black cod falls apart so easily it’s a challenge to keep it on top your fork, and the Wagyu Don is, in a word, flawless.
Meat not on your menu? The restaurant offers a plethora of vegan dishes via its new, animal product free menu that “will satisfy even the most discerning of palettes”.
Sample this laid back, sophisticated brunch yourself every Friday from 12:30 pm – 4:00 pm. Dhs545pp (Dhs445pp for non-alcoholic package).
