The British capital never disappoints when it comes to cultural offerings. Here are five exhibitions not to miss this summer

1. Perfume: A Sensory Journey through Contemporary Scent at Somerset House 21 June – 17 September

This multi-sensory exhibition features ten extraordinary perfumes and their creators, exploring the way they use certain ingredients to make one-of-a-kind scents. Mark Buxton’s Comme des Garçons 2 and Daniela Andrier’s Purple Rain are some of the fragrances in the show, which also includes an overview of 20th-century perfumery.

2. Fahrelnissa Zeid at Tate Modern 13 June – 8 October

One of the most important artists of the 20th century, Turkish painter Fahrelnissa Zeid trained in Istanbul and Paris and became a household name in the ‘50s, when she was living between London and Paris. This exhibition showcases her Abstract paintings, which are influenced by Islamic, Byzantine, Arab and Persian elements.

3. Grayson Perry: The Most Popular Art Exhibition Ever! At The Serpentine Gallery 8 June – 10 September

The Serpentine Gallery’s summer exhibition is always a highlight of the season – its opening party is London’s hottest ticket. This June, artist Grayson Perry showcases his new work, which employs a variety of media such as ceramics, cast iron, bronze, printmaking and tapestry, and tries to address how contemporary art can address a wider and more diverse section of society.

4. Hokusai: Beyond the Great Wave at the British Museum 25 May – 13 August

From his iconic Great Wave to his views of Mount Fuji, Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) is one of Japan’s most admired artists. The British Museum celebrates his work with an in-depth look at the last 30 years of his career, when he made some of his most celebrated masterpieces, which range from paintings and prints to illustrated books.

5. Our House: A Home for All at Selfridges Until 9 June

A visit to London wouldn’t be complete without some retail therapy. You could spend a whole day browsing the accessories, shoes and jewelry – not to mention The Foodhall – at Selfridges, the department store on Oxford Street. This month, you can also attend workshops by artists such as ceramists and weavers at A Home for All, an exhibition space.
