Dive Into Paradise: Harper’s Bazaar Arabia Escapes To Centara Grand Lagoon, Maldives

The just unveiled Centara Grand Lagoon ticks all the spectacular Maldivian island resort staples – but adds its own personal flourish

It opened its doors just six months ago, but you’d never know it. Far from having teething problems, the staff navigated every aspect of the stay – from pre-ordering kids’ meals the moment they sat down, to navigating through the airport on arrival and onto the awaiting 50-minute speedboat transfer – with such ease that you’d think this well-oiled operation had been established for years. And ultimately that is what sets resorts in this archipelago apart. Sure, there may be a modicum of differentiation between properties when it comes to menus, massages and Maldivian touches – but it is the warmth and service which one remembers. After all, this is the place that (turquoise-hued) dreams are made of, with crystal-clear water teaming with wildlife, white sand beaches and frolicking dolphins – but no Insta-friendly vista can trump a personal touch.

It is no wonder that it is service – and of course the spa – that this Thai resort excels at, combining Asian hospitality with fivestar finishes and flourishes that illustrate the modernity of the space. The newly launched Centara Grand Lagoon lets you opt for modern overwater villas alongside timber walkways with plunge pools that lead to uninterrupted sea views, or ensconce yourself in a beach villa – ideal for little ones – with soft sand to build castles on your doorstep. Plus, there’s the bonus of being able to explore the adjacent Mirage Lagoon resort (there’s a lazy river!) – before retreating to your own cossetted haven.

Families can take advantage of a kids’ club, while romantic duos have an adultsonly pool to park themselves, in addition to a main pool too. Dining is far from an after-thought, with The Gallery providing an international buffet (don’t miss the chocolate counter), while Bluefin beach club serves up laid-back vibes alongside a stand-out tuna tataki. The stand-out spot? Understandably, Thai Suan Bua. And for those who’ve splashed out on the bigger two and three-bedroom villas, there’s The Club for added drinking and dining pleasures. Don’t miss drinks flanked by sting-rays and baby sharks at the aptly named Sunset Social.

Tick off must-dos, from fishing trips to dolphin spotting, plus your personal butler will conjure pop up dining, or whisk up a curry feast – basically catering to your every holiday whim. And when you leave? Despite the natural beauty, the sumptuous food and the pampering, it’s the memory of the people which will undoubtedly linger.
