Why The Fashion Industry’s Favourite New York Hotel Needs To Be On Your Radar
An Upper East Side classic with a twist, The Mark is the fashion insider’s go-to – and we’re a notoriously fussy bunch
New York isn’t exactly lacking in boujie lodgings for you to hang your hat whenever you pass through town – be that grand, sweeping and heavy on the marble, or those quirkier and more intimate, with an if-you-know-you-know appeal.

There are very few, however, which can profess to take a little of both, marrying Upper East Side, grande-dame sophistication with a playful youthfulness that is whimsically sprinkled throughout – from the ‘haute’ dog cart outside (a fixture as iconic as the black and white Deco-esque floor of the lobby), to the fashion illustrations on its website and beyond. It’s little wonder that The Mark is the city stay of choice for fashion folk far and wide – a discerning lot, to put it mildly.

But then who wouldn’t want the world’s most exacting jet-setters to give their seal of approval before booking their Big Apple bolthole? With a location that allows for strolls in Central Park when the mood arises, a spree at Bergdorf Goodman if you’re feeling slightly less virtuous (guests have 24-hour access to the store.

Yes, you read that correctly), and a mere hop, skip and jump down the road from being able to take in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Mark is certainly well-placed. In fact, when it comes to The Met Gala, taking place in said museum, The Mark becomes the starting line – and quite possibly the finish line, too – with fashion’s great and good sashaying out of its famed striped lobby before heading to the event.

If your Louboutins aren’t quite up to pounding the pavements, however, the hotel’s adorable pedicabs are on offer (complete with signature striped canopy) to chauffer you to Manhattan’s finest boutiques and haute spots. Service and style. Pretty much The Mark’s M.O., in fact, and just two of the reasons its desirability continues to thrive.

No task was too much trouble during our stay, with the concierge going over and above to get us a dinner reservation at a particularly hard-to-contact restaurant in Dumbo. When said eatery refused to answer the phone, The Mark’s concierge asked a friend working in a nearby hotel to walk down in person to make the booking for us. However, if you should so wish to dine at the hotel itself, its restaurant by the Jean-Georges will hardly disappoint.

Lastly, New York may be the city that never sleeps, but a fantastic bed is still – quite possibly – the most important essential of all. Revival bed linen had us unceremoniously stripping the mattress to write down where to head to in order to purchase the same – a little piece of The Mark we could take home. If only there was more.
