Why The Red Sea is Set To Become The Next Can’t-Miss Destination for Luxury Travellers

Saudi Arabia’s newest all-encompassing tourist haven appeals to those looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experiences

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has affirmed itself as an essential travel destination for anyone with even the slightest bit of wanderlust. From the heritage sites of AlUla and Hegra, to the vibrant city of Riyadh and Jeddah, the Kingdom is a treasure trove of awe inspiring locations. And now there is a new reason to visit with the opening of The Red Sea, which is already shaping up to become one of the region’s most coveted destinations.

The Red Sea destination is located on the country’s west coast has become the subject of one of Saudi Arabia’s most significant development projects, focusing on regenerative tourism within some of the most stunning landscapes in the region. Picture vibrant coral reefs, cerulean blue waters, secluded desert island retreats and towering sand dunes, all rolled into one sweeping location. A series of spectacular island and inland resorts, which began to open this year, are the brainchild of the Saudi-based company Red Sea Global. Upon total completion in 2030, The Red Sea will comprise an impressive 50 resorts, offering 8,000 hotel rooms and more than 1,000 residential properties across 22 islands and six inland locations. It will also be home to luxury marinas, an 18-hole championship golf course, extravagant entertainment venues, gourmet dining experiences, and cutting edge leisure facilities.

Aligning with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, Red Sea Global is also the developer behind some of the country’s most inspiring projects and destinations, including Amaala, an expansive integrated family wellness destination, Red Sea International Airport, and many more, like Thuwal Private Retreat, along Saudi’s west coast.

Six Senses Southern Dunes, The Red Sea

Nestled amidst rolling sand dunes and turquoise seas, Six Senses Southern Dunes, The Red Sea is a relaxing oasis, offering the best of Saudi hospitality and culture and showcasing the region’s dramatic landscape. The resort features 36 guest rooms and suites and 40 pool villas, offering breathtaking views of the desert dunes. As with all Six Senses resorts, expect to experience a taste of tradition combined with five-star hospitality. The sustainability-focused resort, which will be completely run by solar energy, will also comprise a huge 3,975 square metre Six Senses Spa, five restaurants and an outdoor temperature-controlled pool. In addition, Six Senses Southern Dunes, The Red Sea will provide exciting experiences for guests, giving them a taste of local culture, including fishing trips, sadu weaving, cinema under the stars and cooking lessons.

St. Regis Red Sea Resort

Located on its own private island, St. Regis Red Sea Resort is accessed via boat or seaplane and is reminiscent of some of the world’s most exclusive island destinations. It features 90 overwater and beachfront villas, each with a private pool and fitted out with bright and modern interiors. The island, which is surrounded by the glistening blue waters of the Red Sea, also includes an outdoor pool, spa and fitness centre, three fine dining restaurants and a kid’s club, making this a family friendly resort. All guests can benefit from the St. Regis butler service; an array of signature rituals and experiences to keep visitors entertained and relaxed.

Nujuma, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve

Located within the same cluster of islands, Nujuma, a Ritz- Carlton Reserve is an island paradise surrounded by crystal clear waters. This unique property makes the most of the region’s spectacular coral reef, offering incredible opportunities for snorkelling or diving. The resort features five-star overwater accommodations and countless activities to try, from sailing and windsurfing to kayaking in the mangrove forests.

Once-In-A-Lifetime Experiences

Across The Red Sea, a key draw for visitors is the range of incredible experiences. WAMA and Galaxea, two subsidiary brands owned by Red Sea Global, offer exclusive water sports and diving activities across The Red Sea and Amaala. Meanwhile, Akun offers adventure and sports experiences across the region, with the chance to try adrenaline-pumping activities. Also of note is the imminent arrival of the world-famous Bear Grylls Survival Academy. It promises to offer outdoor enthusiasts the opportunity to learn key team building, wilderness education and survival skills on a variety of course options, all of which have been designed by Bear Grylls himself.

Getting There

The new Red Sea International Airport received its first domestic flights in September, with five weekly flights to and from both Riyadh and Jeddah. The Airport was designed by Foster + Partners and features five large dune-like pods inspired by the colours and textures of the desert landscape. The location of the airport is also strategic for holiday travellers as it can be reached in less than eight hours by 80 per cent of the world. “We promised to make The Red Sea a place where people from all around the world would come to experience the best of Saudi culture, hospitality, and nature,” said John Pagano, Group CEO of Red Sea Global at the time of the airport’s opening. “Now, with the first flight touching down at Red Sea International Airport and our first resorts receiving bookings, Saudi Arabia’s position on the global tourism map is all but secured,” he added.
