The Shape of Water leads the way with 12 nods

2018 is quickly becoming an exciting year for women in the entertainment industry. Award season kicked off with a sartorial blackout at the 75th Golden Globes where the A-listers made a statement by wearing all-black dresses on the red carpet as part of the #MeToo and #TimesUp protest for women’s rights. And now, for the first time in 12 years of a male at the helm, the British Academy Film Awards (BATAs) have announced a female taking the stage.

Joanna Lumley will take the place of Stephen Fry on 18 February, making her the first solo (women have held the position of joint host) female host at the award show in over 20 years. "It's just so unbelievably thrilling," said the 71-year-old actress. "I'd like to thank Bafta so much for asking me to do this – I said yes indecently quickly."

Lumley has received two BAFTA awards for her performance in the hit sitcom Absolutely Fabulous and won the BAFTA Fellowship in 2017.

The award show also announced the nominees for this year:
