Wedding Cake Trends For 2020

Listen up if you’re getting married this year

One of the most respected and trusted cake connoisseurs in the UK, Rosalind Miller, has given us her predictions for the most popular wedding cake styles for 2020. From patterns to techniques and textures, these are the spectacular cake trends you’ll be seeing at weddings this year.

[1]

Macramé and crochet

“Trends in cake design often follow trends in fashion and interiors and we have seen a lot of macramé and crochet across both sectors recently. With that in mind, we can expect to see macramé and crochet style influences play a significant role in design elements through piped buttercream or royal icing. It’s something we are excited about for 2020 as it lends itself so well to wedding cakes – the intricacy and delicacy of the tactile style can replicate beautifully in cake design.”

[2]

Prairie-style floral patterns

“Similarly, we predict that traditional and prairie-style floral patterns will increase in demand, created in either hand-painted patterns or using real pressed flowers and pressed flower petals. Brides who are inspired in their everyday lives by fashion and the environment will love this style; it ticks all the boxes in terms of what’s high on the agenda right now and simply looks so pretty. It can also be more cost effective.”

[3]

Organic and natural

“As concerns for the environment grow, we have been witnessing a shift in requests for cakes that feel organic and natural. Creating textures in the cake icing creates a contrast with floral decorative elements and is a real rising trend; stone, concrete and rough surfaces complement the delicacy of the cake creation. Introducing wooden elements in the overall design will give the natural look the edge, but if the rustic vibe isn’t for you, think marbled designs and stone. This look is so versatile and can be used to bring striking textures to cakes. Non-traditional brides looking for new ideas for a contemporary and creative wedding will love this trend.”

[4]

Textured floral patterns

“When it comes to method, ethereal textured floral patterns made using a palette knife painting technique with buttercream and royal icing is on the rise. For brides who aren’t fans of the bold and dramatic, this is perfect – and the idea that less is more is something to watch out for in 2020 when it comes to the cake; understated, yet striking in effect, beautiful cakes perfect in design with just enough of everything rather than an abundance of design elements.”

[5]

Desert tables

“In contrast, dessert tables and lavish spreads to create impressive centrepiece talking points are also on the rise. Whether it’s a huge lavish affair with an abundance of desserts or a smaller table with bite-size desserts all matching the theme of the cake, a show-stopper of a table that people can gather around becomes an experience.”
