The UAE Approves COVID-19 Treatment

The UAE is taking yet another critical step in ensure the health and safety of its citizens and residents alike.

According to Arabian Business, the United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Health and Prevention has granted regulatory approval to Gilead Sciences, a biopharmaceutical company, for remdesivir.

Remdesivir is the first drug shown to be effective in treating cases of the virus.

“At least two major US studies have shown that the anti-viral drug can reduce the duration of hospital stays for those suffering from the novel coronavirus,” the business magazine reports.

While the current supply of remdesivir is limited worldwide, Gilead said it anticipates a new supply of the drug will become available again this month, with more supplies continuing to increase in the coming months and into 2021

But it’s looking like remdesivir won’t be the only COVID-19 treatment available throughout the UAE. Back in June 2020, the nation announced it was testing stem cell treatments for patients suffering from the virus.

According to Dr. Fatima Al Kaabi, consultant and head of Hematology and Oncology Department at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (and senior specialist in research related with the stem cell project), the treatment had shown positive results in patients who were sick with COVID-19.
