Mark Your Calendars! Christie’s Will Soon Hold The Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds Auction

From intricately decorated pottery from 10th century Iran to exquisite Mughal artwork from 18th century India, British auction house Christie’s Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds spring sale will will be comprised of 261 lots, each one seemingly more interesting than the next.

If you’re an art collector or simply one to appreciate all things that tell the tale of the past, especially the ancient Muslim world and the South Asian subcontinent, this auction, which includes invaluable rare pieces, is bound to be of interest.

The sale set to take place at their London headquarters on April 25 and is expected to include paintings, ceramics, metal work, works on paper, textiles, rugs, and carpets.

The auction is set to showcase 261 beautiful pieces. These include an exquisite miniature octagonal Qur’an, dated AH 985/1577-8 AD, which was made in Madinah; the Qur’an has been estimated to be worth Dhs 45,420 (GBP 10,000) to Dhs 68,125 (GBP 15,000).

Another range of items that are bound to command the attention of bidders are the finely woven Turkish rugs featuring intricate work and engravings.

A standout from the carpets is a full silk piece, with accents of oxidized gold and silver metal-thread, highlighting the mastery of 19th century weavers.

For lovers of jewellery, an emerald, diamond and gold bazuband (armlet) might be of particular interest.

One of the other remarkable items in the sale is an album of watercolours of Iznik ceramics showcasing a selection of renowned and rare Iznik ceramics from the Louis Huth collection.

It includes 44 single and double-page watercolor paintings, depicting various Iznik bowls, flasks, and ewers.

The auction will also include a rare and complete illustrated manuscript copy of the Khamsa of Nizami by 12th century Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi, along with the Khamsa of Amir Khusraw Dihlavi, a 13th century Persian Sufi singer, musician, poet, and scholar.

Additionally, the sale will offer Persian and Indian paintings from the Collection of Charles and Regina Slatkin. The artwork includes works attributed to Mahmud Muzahhib, Reza ‘Abbasi, and Mu’in Musavvir, masters of painting from the Safavid era – a ruling dynasty of Iran.
