#StopHateForProfit: Why Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington and Others Won’t Be Posting On Facebook and Instagram Today
Celebrities are “freezing” their social media accounts for 24 hours, in order to support a new campaign which aims to hold social media companies accountable for hate on their platforms
Several celebrities are coming together in order to support the #StopHateForProfit campaign: an initiative created to combat misinformation shared across social media platforms.
According to Stop Hate for Profit’s website, the cause is an ongoing campaign to hold social media companies (most notably Facebook and Facebook-owned Instagram) accountable for hate on their platforms.
“Social media must prioritize people over profit, and they must do it now,” a statement reads on Stop Hate for Profit’s website. The campaign appears to be encouraging social media users to partake in a 24-hour Instagram and Facebook “freeze” on September 16 “in which everyone involved will refrain from posting on Instagram for that day.”
While many companies have joined the cause a while back, along with celebrities like actor-comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, notable A-Listers like Kim Kardashian West and Kerry Washington recently announced their support in the past few days.
Bazaar shares a list of celebrities who have declared their support for Stop Hate for Profit here.

Misinformation can be harmful. It’s up to us to do our research and make sure what we’re sharing is correct information. It’s up to Facebook and other social platforms to stop the amplification of hate and the undermining of democracy. #StopHateForProfit. https://t.co/BY2kGrYl7B

Jennifer Lawrence
Facebook ignores hate & disinformation on their site. This is not an “operational mistake.” It is a deliberate decision to put profits over people and democracy.

I love that I can connect directly with you through Instagram and Facebook, but I can’t sit by and stay silent while these platforms continue to allow the spreading of hate, propaganda and misinformation – created by groups to sow division and split America apart pic.twitter.com/XkxzABn7qw

Facebook claims they address hate, yet they continue to look the other way as racist, violent groups and posts sow division and split America apart – only taking steps after people are killed. (1/2) pic.twitter.com/AfO70nEEo8

These tools were not built to spread hate, violence, and misinformation, but when companies and individuals benefit from these behaviors, financially or otherwise, it becomes their responsibility to mitigate the unintended utilization. #StopHateForProfit https://t.co/s54jmjfmRg
