Success – and subsequent stardom – in the entertainment world comes with its own set of unique downfalls: the lack of privacy, being stalked by paparazzi and keen fans, some of whom have no boundaries when it comes to personal space and safety.
In the past few years, Pedro Pascal has had a meteoric rise to fame. The Chilean-American actor first came to notoriety when he stepped into the role of Oberyn Martell for Season Four of Game of Thrones; more recently we know him as Joel, the star of HBO’s The Last of Us series, and as The Mandalorian in the Disney+ series of the same name.
Having worked on projects that have long garnered cult followings (The Mandalorian, for example, is part of the Star Wars franchise) it’s understandable that fans get very excited at the chance to meet and interact with the 48-year-old actor. But how on earth could one of them have passed on an eye infection?

In a recent video interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pedro sat down with a few of his fellow actors for a roundtable conversation about their chosen craft: Academy Award-winning Jeff Bridges, Succession’s Kieran Culkin, British actor Damson Idris, The Sopranos’ Michael Imperioli, and American Horror Story’s Evan Peters took part in the conversation.
Pedro explained how eager Game of Thrones became keen on pretending to reenact the gruesome death scene his character faced at the hands of Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane. (Spoiler alert: Oberyn’s eyes were gouged out) He notes that, at first, he was happy that people were excited about the character, but shares that he began having some issues with his eyes and a bit of an infection at one point.
“People were super into taking selfies with their thumbs in my eyes. And at first, I was so earnest and happy about the success of the character in the show, I’d let them,” he says in the video. “And then I remember getting a bit of an eye infection.”
It seems the germs would have transferred from people’s hands into his eyes, resulting in an irritation of some form. Pedro did not reveal if he had tested positive for pink eye or if he had to go on antibiotics to clear up the infection.
While occupational hazards exist in all industries, Pascal’s experience is a reminder that even though celebrities are public figures, they are still people and deserve to be treated safely and respectfully – just like anyone else.
