Gladiator 2 is officially in the making.
Releasing in 2000, the critically-acclaimed epic Gladiator told the story of Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius played by Russell Crowe. The film became the second highest-grossing film of the year and bagged Best Picture at The Oscars in 2001.
Taking place years after the events of the first film, Gladiator 2 will revolve around Lucius, the son of Lucilla and Lucius Verus and grandson of Marcus Aurelius, played by Oscar-nominated actor Paul Mescal. The sequel will bring back Connie Nielsen and Djimon Hounsou to reprise their roles and add Denzel Washington, Barry Keoghan, Pedro Pascal, and other performers, according to Collider.
Standing out against the backdrop of period films that narrated the saga of fictional Ancient Roman warriors, Gladiator achieved technical feats that were incredible to witness during the time, which audiences are hoping only get better in the sequel. Fans of the original production are eagerly awaiting part two of the historical epic that reinvented the genre with its tone, visuals, themes, and musical score.
When is Gladiator 2 coming out?
According to Collider, the sequel to the 12-time Academy Award-nominated film is currently in its pre-production phase with a finalised screenplay. It was supposed to start filming in late March 2023 but we haven’t seen any photos from the production yet.
Gladiator 2 has a tentative release date of November 22, 2024. Check back for more information on this developing story.
