Why Did Pedro Pascal Change His Name? Bazaar Arabia shares everything you need to know…
Hollywood’s heartthrob of the moment, Pedro Pascal, was not born with the name he uses professionally.
Instead, the 47-year-old actor was named José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal by his parents, doctor José Balmaceda Riera and child psychologist Verónica Pascal.
In his 25-year-long career, Pedro played small roles in numerous television shows and films before he finally hit his stride as a multifaceted actor who now leads a number of hit shows, including HBO’s most recent series, The Last of Us, where he takes on the role of survivalist Joel Miller alongside Bella Ramsey, Anna Torv, and Nico Parker.
So… Why Did Pedro Pascal Change His Name?
The Mandalorian star shared in an interview with People that he experienced a tragic loss when he first moved to New York City. Pedro’s mother passed away right before his career took off, which led him to change his last name to hers.
Another reason why the actor began to go by Pedro Pascal professionally is because “Americans had such a hard time pronouncing Balmaceda,” according to Variety. Pedro also told the publication about how his Latino identity limited him from bagging non-stereotypical roles in Hollywood.
Despite these challenges, the actor went on to land memorable parts in some of the biggest television shows and films such as Game of Thrones, Narcos, Wonder Woman, and more that have thrust him into the limelight as a successful and sought-after performer today.
