#ChicEats: Bull & Bear, Waldorf Astoria DIFC, Dubai

One balmy Friday afternoon, having heard rumours of a new menu, we visited Bull & Bear for a leisurely lunch. Nestled on the 18th floor of the Waldorf Astoria DIFC, with impressive panoramic views of Downtown Dubai and the Burj Khalifa, this restaurant is a feast for both the eyes and stomach. Golden sculptures of the bull and bear of Wall Street fame greeted us as we entered the opulent yet low-key interior.

We sat down next to one of the floor-to-celing windows and began our foray into the gourmet New York-inspired fare the kitchen is famed for. With it being a warm day we opted for a fresh and zingy ginger and elderflower cocktail, a wonderfully tart concoction with the slightest hint of fizz. First came a classic; the crisp and refreshing Waldorf salad which was accompanied by a pumpkin soup so creamy and rich it almost deserves to be a main course by itself. It was accompanied by the indulgent addition of sautéed pumpkin and stuffed ravioli. One could be forgiven for wondering how the main course could possibly improve on this, but it certainly did.

The generous portion of lobster linguini was perfectly cooked and paired with shellfish that melted in the mouth. The star dish, however, was, of course, the steak. There was a dizzying array of cuts and types of meat to choose from, all of them the finest varieties from around the world. On the recommendation of our knowledgeable server, we tried the Omaha rib-eye paired with a peppercorn sauce and chunky-cut fries.  Our knife cut through the perfectly-cooked meat like butter, while the flavour and texture did not disappoint. A dash of luxury was added to the dish on the side with a crispy roasted jacket potato garnished with caviar.

Finally, we finished off the decadent meal with desserts. The smoked tiramisu was pleasantly surprising with the pops of coffee jelly, while the dramatic chocolate fondant poured over a golden dome melted to reveal ice-cream, which was pleasing to both the eyes and the palate. Altogether, it was a lunch that more than satisfied in this stylish and upbeat venue. With a menu that is decadent and fun, we recommend the Bull & Bear for an impulsive lunch date or a fun night out with friends. Just make sure to bring an appetite.
