Why Was Season 2 Of The Idol Cancelled?

A swift farewell to HBO’s The Idol; Bazaar Arabia shares everything we know here…

In a surprising turn of events, The Idol, a show that first ignited high anticipation and premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, has faced an abrupt end. A mere three months after its debut, the curtains have officially fallen on the series. Critics were quick to label it as one of HBO’s most controversial TV shows due to its provocative nature.

Directed by Sam Levinson and Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, The Idol boasts a star-studded cast including Lily-Rose Depp, Dan Levy, and BLACKPINK’s Jennie. The show delves into a shadowy narrative about a renowned singer’s unwavering pursuit of attaining the status of the greatest pop star in America. Her ambitions are rekindled by a charismatic nightclub owner, played by Abel himself.

Despite initial intrigue generated partially by Abel’s large fan base, the show’s reception among audiences turned notably sour. Garnering a mere 19% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the series even had to cut down its original six-episodes to just five episodes. Critics’ labeling it “the worst TV show” and “a painfully tedious TV non-event,” painted a bleak picture.

Given the wave of disappointment that swept over viewers, the announcement of “The Idol” being axed may not be entirely surprising. The network released a statement stating: “After extensive contemplation, HBO, in collaboration with the creators and producers, has made the decision not to proceed with a second season. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the creators, cast, and crew for their exceptional dedication.”
