Recoginsed in the Middle East as one of the most influential figures in the music industry, Umm Kulthum needs no introduction. Adored by fans of all ages, this month the Egyptian singer will be honored in a tribute concert held at the Grand Egyptian Museum to celebrate 100 years since she first took to the stage.
However, if you’re unable to attend worry not as the Star of The Orient and her legendary story are returning to the silver screen with a new biographical film. And if that’s not exciting enough, acclaimed actor Mona Zaki will play the lead role.

News of the project came after the Saudi General Entertainment Authority (GEA) announced the establishment of the Big Time Investment, with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture serving as a co-sponsor of the partnership, to grow and support the production of both Saudi and Egyptian films.
Chairman of the Board of Directors, Turki Alalshik, also shared that as of now 14 Egyptian films have been approved for the grant, including a fresh and unique Umm Kulthum biography. While this will not be the first time a film will be made about the iconic artist, fans are already anticipating Mona’s portrayal, the actor having proven her impressive talent and range in recent films including the hit Rehla 404.
Although details of the movie have been hush-hush, the feature film is titled El-Set and will be directed by Marwan Hamed and written by author and screenwriter Ahmed Mourad.
Other approved films include Welad Rizk 3, The Blue Elephant 3, Se3eedy Fi El Gam3a El Amreciya 2 (Upper Egyptian in the American University 2), and Lessa Hetta starring Mona’s husband Ahmed Helmy. Among the projects is also She3ar Cairo, bringing singer Nancy Ajram to the big screen for the first time as she stars alongside Karim Abdel Aziz.
It’s safe to say we cannot wait for the amazing films to be released in the coming years!
