Kaylia Nemour has broken world records for her country, Algeria, and even the African continent, becoming the first African to win a medal in gymnastics at the Olympics.
Yesterday Kaylia came in first place in the Women’s Uneven Bars division, achieving a gold medal on her signature apparatus by scoring 15.700 points, beating out China’s Qiu Qiyuan, the 2023 World Champion. Team USA’s Sunisa Lee claimed her bronze on the apparatus with 14.800 points.
“I had put the Olympic medal as my screen saver on my phone. I think I’ll change it to put the real one,” the Algerian-French athlete told Agence France-Presse. She finished fifth in the all-around competition, no small feat which will certain cement her as one of Africa’s great athletes, having made history at the games. Even Simone Biles was spotted cheering her on in the crowd.

She is French-Algerian.
Kaylia was born in Saint-Benoît-la-Forêt, France to an Algerian father, Jamel Nemour and aFrench Mother, Stephanie Nemour on December 30, 2006. She has two brothers and sisters. Her sisters have also competed in artistic gymnastics at the national level in France.
Kaylia has been doing gymnastics since she was only 4 years old.
The Algerian-French gymnast has been competing and practicing the sport since she was only four years old.

She made history at the Paris Olympics.
On August 4, 2024, Kaylia she became the first African athlete to take home an Olympic gymnastics medal, winning gold at the Paris Olympics 2024.
The French-born Algerian Olympian has been representing Algeria after cutting ties with the FFrench Gymnastics Federation, after ongoing disagreements over her training location and the timeline for her return to the sport after surgeries.
She also made history at Antwerp 2023.
Last year, she became the first African gymnast ever to medal at the worlds champions in Antwerp, with her performance on the world’s hardest uneven bars where she won the silver medal.
She is a master at the uneven bars.
The rising star who now has over 250K Instagram follower has taken home the gold for the uneven bars – her strong suit in the sport.
