Saudi Arabia’s Theatre and Performing Arts Commission announced its first-ever grand opera the Kingdom. Not only will the show be performed by both international and locally trained KSA artists, but this opera will also be the largest Arabic grand opera ever held.
Coming to Riyadh this spring, the commission is set to produce Zarqa Al Yamama, an opera recounting the story of the pre-Islamic blue-eyed legend. From the dates to how to get tickets, Bazaar Arabia shares everything you need to know here about the grand opera.
Riyadh Grand Opera: Everything We Know About Zarqa Al Yamama
Zarqa Al Yamama will tell the story of the famed Arabian legend in the largest grand opera performance the Middle East has ever seen. Know for her foresight and intuition, the opera will take audiences on a journey as the heroine tries to warn her tribe of the impending danger coming their way and the struggles she faces.
The show has promised to include some of the biggest names in music and theatre including renowned mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly; Saudi tenor singer Khayran Alzahrani, and Saudi opera singer Sawsan Albahiti. Several international artists — including British opera singer Clive Bayley, Italian soprano and tenor Serena Farnocchia, and British baritone George von Bergen — will also join the cast.
It was also announced that the outstanding German symphony orchestra Dresdner Sinfoniker will perform the score for the show, originally written by Australian composer Lee Bradshaw.
Saudi poet and writer Saleh Zamanan also participated in the project’s development, guaranteeing audiences a captivating show full of superb storytelling, mesmerising vocal performances and an overall unforgettable night out.
Saudi Arabia has been taking steps to enrich the country’s cultural scene, most recently announcing the development of its first opera house, and opera-goers cannot wait to visit it.
When is the Riyadh Grand Opera?
The production of Zarqa Al Yamama will run from the 25th of April until the 4th of May 2024, with showtimes yet to be announced.
