What is Saudi Green Initiative Day? Everything We Know About The Kingdom’s Sustainability Movement

The inaugural event, underpinned by the SGI movement, aims to combat climate change and promote a better quality of life for all

Yesterday, Saudi Arabia commemorated its first annual Saudi Green Initiative Day. The event seeks to honour the Kingdom’s efforts towards environmental conservation and sustainability, as well as foster community involvement in contributing to a greener future.

Celebrated every year on March 27, the recently announced event coincides with the launch of the The Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) on March 27 2021, championed by Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman.

This year, with the theme ‘For Our Today and Their Tomorrow: KSA Together for a Greener Future’ the celebratory day highlights the collaboration of more than 80 public and private sector projects that form part of the SGI, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency.

Together, the projects mark a total investment of more than SAR705 billion in the green economy, and fall in line with goals of Saudi’s Vision 2030 programme.

According to the Green Initiatives website, the SGI aims to tackle environmental issues by working towards three targets: reduce carbon emissions by 278 million tons annually by 2030; grow 10 million trees across the Kingdom, and protect 30 percent of Saudi Arabia’s land and see by 2030.

Under the SGI, the projects currently in progress range from afforestation and biodiversity protection to emissions reduction and establishing new protected areas.

In essence, the SGI aims to improve quality of life for all within in the Kingdom, as stated on the official website, and have a positive impact on both the environmental and societal sectors of the country.
