Editor's Letter: Salma Awwad Introduces The Empowerment Issue

In this day and age, privacy is a bigger privilege than fame. Both are hard to attain and even more challenging to preserve. We’ve created a semi-virtual reality for ourselves where navigating constant over-exposure is the new normal, where social media and a permanent state of connectivity dictate our lives, and where we can’t remember the last time we went to an event when someone didn’t whip out their phone for a group shot.

Floating under the radar is, simply put, no longer a realistic option; especially if one aspires to success in the fashion industry – or most other industries for that matter.

As a creative introvert, being selective with the messages I choose to put out there is of utmost importance, which can be a great challenge in a time when a tidal wave of output is what’s expected. Throwing things into the .com universe just to say I’ve arrived is absolutely not my style – authenticity comes far above that on my personal totem pole of values.

However, we all know this isn’t a one-size-fits-all kind of deal, with a back-to-back proliferation of posts proving to be the recipe for success, and often the fame that comes with it, too. The family that can be single-handedly credited for pioneering this formula - and still lead the charge today – is the Kardashians; a clan who are responsible for revolutionising practically every single cultural touch point they’ve made contact with.

In this issue, we zoom in on its two head honchos - Kris and Kylie Jenner: the matriarch and the billion-dollar baby. A duo whose reverberating global impact is undeniable, but whose bond – as I discovered from spending the day with them - is even more so.

But perhaps that’s what really underpins the star power of it all. Not the lip kits or the algorithms, but the power of family connection that forms the cornerstone of their success. As Kylie told me, “I credit my mum a lot for where Kylie Cosmetics is now. With my creativity and her business mind, together [we’re] just the dream team.”

Whatever your take on the influence of these women, the important message is this: staying true to yourself – whichever form that may take – is the most empowering act there is. And who knows, maybe it will be you forging the path next, paving the way to the next wave of female empowerment…
