Ralph Lauren Just Released A Shirt Made Completely From Recycled Materials
Their iconic polo shirt has been reimagined made from plastic bottles and dyed in an innovative process that uses zero water
From Grabiela Hearst’s eco-friendly handbag collection made from existing materials to high street giants like Mango launching ‘committed’ collections and fashion’s favourite eco-warrior Stella McCartney, the industry is slowly but surely turning their heads to a more sustainable future.
Case in point? Ralph Lauren has reimagined its iconic polo shirt made from recycled plastic bottles and dyed in an innovative process that uses zero water.
“Ralph Lauren will commit to removing at least 170 million bottles from landfills and oceans by 2025,” says David Lauren, chief innovation officer at the American fashion house. “Plastic waste is a major issue threatening the environment – we want to be part of the solution and utilize an innovative approach to create something valuable.”
Currently, the fashion industry are the second biggest contributors to global warming due to the amount of waste produced both from water to make the clothes and synthetic cottons that are not recycled properly and end up in landfill secreting harmful chemicals into the air.
“When Ralph founded our company more than 50 years ago, he did so with the idea that whatever we create is meant to be worn, loved, and passed on for generations,” adds Halide Alagoz, executive vice president, chief supply chain and sustainability officer at Ralph Lauren. “It’s with this spirit of timelessness that we approach sustainability.”
