Breaking News: Jonathan Anderson Is Stepping Down From Loewe
Ending an 11-year tenure as creative director, Jonathan Anderson is closing a transformative chapter for the brand
Jonathan Anderson is leaving Loewe. After 11 years as Creative Director, the British designer is stepping down, closing a significant chapter for the Spanish luxury house. Under his leadership, Loewe has gained international recognition and evolved into one of the most influential brands in contemporary fashion.
“Over the last eleven years, I have been lucky enough to be surrounded by people with the imagination, the skills, tenacity and resourcefulness to find a way to say ‘yes’ to all my wildly ambitious ideas,” Anderson said in a statement. “While my own chapter draws to a close, LOEWE’s story will continue for many years to come and I will look on with pride.”

Since joining Loewe in 2013, Anderson has reshaped the house’s identity, fusing heritage craftsmanship with a contemporary and often conceptual approach. His tenure was marked by bold design decisions, artistic collaborations, and a reinvention of classic luxury codes. Under his direction, Loewe introduced signature pieces like the Puzzle bag, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, as well as collections that blurred the lines between fashion and art.
Reflecting on the significance of craftsmanship, the designer shared: “One of my proudest achievements is launching the Craft Prize. We created a platform that genuinely supports and gives visibility to vanishing crafts, young makers, old masters, and new ideas.”
This deep appreciation for artistry extends beyond the Craft Prize. Since day one, Anderson envisioned creating a cultural brand. “This idea relied heavily on the trust and generosity of the many artists, craftspeople, estates, foundations, museums and galleries who contributed their work,” he continued.

The timing of the announcement follows Loewe’s recent co-ed presentation on March 10th. In the lead-up to the show, Anderson posted a series of retrospective images on Instagram that many interpreted as a sign of his impending departure. While his next move remains unknown, speculation is already building about his future in the industry.
His exit comes as part of a broader shake-up in the luxury fashion sphere. Donatella Versace recently announced her departure from Versace after nearly three decades; Gucci confirmed that Balenciaga’s Demna will take over as creative director, following Sabato de Sarno’s short-lived tenure. Elsewhere, Maison Margiela has a new appointment, and Proenza Schouler is undergoing leadership changes. Over the past year, luxury houses have seen an unprecedented turnover: Virginie Viard left Chanel, Hedi Slimane exited Celine, and John Galliano departed from Margiela.
With so many high-profile transitions, the question now is: who will step in next?
