Just in, popular shoe designer Nicholas Kirkwood is closing down his brand. The creative took to Instagram earlier today to announce the heartbreaking news as he mentions in the caption, “Goodbye for now…”
The post includes a long letter reflecting back on his incredible journey, announcing the closing down of the brand he has been running for 18 years, and thanking everyone who has been supportive.
“It’s been a wild, exhilarating journey. I’ve collected so many incredible memories and invaluable learnings with the brilliantly creative fashion visionaries I’ve collaborated with over the years.”
Known for his Intricate exciting designs that were to be seen on the catwalks of Erdem, Rodarte and Peter Pilotto, Nicholas Kirkwood is a prestigious label that has dominated the shoe closets of women with a love for the exceptional.
The German-born designer’s statement shoes contain unique materials such as shaved stingray and mirror leather, filling a market niche for consumers with a taste for the extravagant. According to Business Of Fashion, Nicholas was inspired by the fierce hat designs of his first mentor, milliner Philip Treacy, recognising the lack of equally as outstanding shoe options. The launch of his first collection in 2005 was a ubiquitous success with industry experts like André Leon Talley positively speaking out about his creations.

From disco ball pumps to 80s arcade games-inspired heels to black and transparent boots, Nicholas Kirkwood had a shoe for everyone and every occasion. Designs that even shoe lover Carrie Bradshaw portraying Sarah Jessica Parker was happily wearing will hopefully not be missed for too long though, as the designer also mentioned that he is continuously focusing his efforts towards the research and development of environmentally friendly materials as well as production.
