The Hadid sisters and Dutch-Moroccan beauty Imaan Hammam took the runway for Versace's autumn/winter 2019 collection in Milan on Friday. Drawing heavily from their '90s archives for inspiration this season, what better way than to enlist some of the most iconic models of past and present?
The fashion house called on just about every major supermodel in the business – including the Hadids, Hammam, Kendall Jenner, Irina Shayk, Stella Maxwell and Kaia Gerber – as well as some ‘90s fashion royalty, like Shalom Harlow and Versace catwalk veteran Stephanie Seymour.
Between all of the brand's signature leather, lace, knitwear and tweed (with bright splashes of colour and crystal embellishments to refresh it), the show was a celebration of the house's grunge heritage and notoriety for having ‘an attitude’, in the words of Donatella Versace.
Gigi stunned in a sleek black asymmetrical evening gown with a gold V-emblazoned belt and chunky safety pin earrings, whilst Imaan donned a strapless dress adorned with a colourful re-imagination of Versace’s signature gold chains, safety pins (a motif throughout the show) and the brand’s most memorable perfume bottles.
Bella, who was recently the face of the Kith x Versace campaign, rocked an oversized padded leather jacket, lace cut-out leggings and a black lace skirt with staple gold safety pins and other Versace charms fixed to it: a nod to the brand’s spring/summer 1994 collection, which featured uber-elegant skirts and gowns embellished with statement gold safety pins.
The Hadids have had a busy week in Milan, with Bella walking for the likes of Alberta Ferretti, Moschino, Max Mara and Roberto Cavalli and Gigi hitting the catwalk for Prada. They were both featured in the monumental Fendi show, paying tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld and the last collection he designed for the brand.
Kaia wore a shirt emblazoned with a Versace ‘Blonde’ fragrance campaign from 1995, starring Donatella Versace herself. This element of the show paid homage to iconic fashion photography, in this case that of Richard Avedon.
The Hadid sisters, Imaan and Kendall also dazzled later on at the Versace dinner, the Hadids in all-black ensembles and Imaan and Kendall in twinning animal-print dresses.
