Over-the-top feathered hats, dramatic florals, and voluminous silhouettes remind us of fashion's fun side

There's no denying that Paris takes its fashion very seriously, but Valentino rarely plays by the rules. The Italian label's Spring/Summer 2019 womenswear collection showed last night at Paris Fashion Week and creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli brought the fun with larger-than-life silhouettes, feathered accessories, and childlike florals. The stage was set like a hazy oasis, with a backdrop of cacti and palm trees flanking the runway. Each model appeared as though they were ready to jet off for a glamorous summer getaway at the drop of a hat – a very wide-brimmed, feather-accented hat, that is.

Piccioli somehow manages to bridge the gap between couture and casual, kicking the show off with a series of black cotton gowns and two-pieces that were so lax, they almost appear structure-less, the billowy sleeves blending into the dropped waists. The looks then gave way to more playful pieces like a pyjama dress with a gown-like hemline and a pink monochrome set complete with pleats. Florals were plentiful and reminiscent of the 70s and feathers accented the most unexpected of places, like sandals, sleeves, and handbags.

While the silhouettes and colourways were no doubt designed for the fashion set, they don’t take themselves too seriously. Valentino strikes the perfect balance of work and play, and has us dreaming of summertime.
